The Method of Inference from the Traditions of Cause of Revelation in the Doctrinal Verses (Specialized Study of Tafsīr e Ṭabarī)

Abstract

An important discussion of the Quranic Sciences is the apprehension of the Cause of Revelation. It means: What is the cause of revealing the Quran? What is the cause of the revelation of verses regarding various topics? Do all the Quranic verses have been revealed by the Exalted Allah Himself in the form of commandments? Or some question or any incident became the reason for the revelation of some verse or verses. Imām Ṭabarī, in his exegesis, has inferred a lot from the traditions of Sabab e Nuzūl. In many places, he has quoted various causes of revelation for one verse. Where there is a discussion of the rationalistic approach in the doctrinal verses, the discussion of traditions of Sabab e Nuzūl is an important attribute of the subject exegesis. During inference from traditions of Sabab e Nuzūl, Imām Ṭabarī preferred a particular tradition among the various on the basis of some strong evidence. One of his approaches is to apply the verse to all the circumstances which have been transmitted.
